How To Make a Simple Natural Homemade Deodorant

DIY Deodorant

My journey to a better me contains me trying to make and use a Natural  Homemade Deodorant.

So the truth  is my journey to natural products is a slow go and a not very consistent one.  I like to try natural products from time to time and do want to do my part for the environment but i am not die hard.

The only natural deodorant that I have tried in the past is the crystal kind.  Personally, I felt it didn’t really do anything for me.  Maybe I wasn’t using it right but needless to say I didn’t finish the product or repurchase it again.

So why did I want to try to make my own deodorant?   Well, we had a presentation at work the other day and the presenter talked all about her efforts to do her part to reduce reuse and recycle.   One of the things she wanted to change was using commercial deodorants because of their packaging and the aluminum in the product.   The aluminum thing is what struck accord with me.

I am an avid deodorant user, it’s part of my routine.  I know about the correlation regarding aluminum in the body leading to cancer and to Alzheimer’s disease and I have thought many times about trying to do things that will lead to putting less aluminum in my body.

So I thought I would try this natural deodorant thing again because it would be nice to have full control over what i’m putting on my skin.   I’m looking for this product to keep me fresh and smelling good throughout the day and save me alittle coin in the long run before i need to make it again and/or repurchase the ingredients.  I’m a bit skeptical because the natural crystal deodorant product didn’t work  but I will give it a try.

This product is great because it contains NO aluminum, parabens, alcohol, perfumes (although i kinds miss that), triclosan, propylene glycol or talc.

In this recipe the ingredients are baking soda which absorbs and neutralizes odour, Coconut oil for its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and arrowroot which thicken the mixture and essential oil for antibacterial properties like grapefruit, lavandar, bergmont, ylang ylang, rosewood or just to make it smell great.

The cost was super low to make the natural homemade deodorant too!!  I bought the following products from my local Ambrosia Health Food store.

Arrowroot powder = $2.29
Aluminum Free Baking Soda =$1.49
Coconut oil = Free from pantry
Essential Oils =Free from pantry

If you have to buy the last 2 items the cost of production will be more than $3.78  but they will last you for awhile depending on how you are using them and you won’t have to repurchase them if you don’t use alot in this recipe.  This recipe makes a generous amount of natural deodorant.  This natural homemade deodorant will last you approx 3-6months.  I think mine will last for 6months for sure because I made so much.

This post is about how to make the natural homemade deodorant and the next post to follow will be about the results.   Fingers crossed XX lets’s hope this works.  Other ppl have said good things about this recipe so I’m excited to see what happens.

I  think it was Jen from the Simple Green smoothie blog that said “I’ve been using the exact recipe for over 7 years now and I absolutely love it and use it every day”.  She is an avid runner and super busy all day long.   I’m not half as busy as she is so this has gotta work…LOL

I hope you enjoy this recipe and share it with family and friends.

Natural Homemade Deodorant

DIY Deodorant

What You Need:

1/2 c Baking Soda (use less if baking soda irritates you)
1/2 c Arrowroot Powder (corn starch can be substituted)
5 tbs unrefined organic coconut oil
20 drops essential oil of your choice
1 medium sized bowl
1 c measuring cup
1 tbs spoon
1 spatula
1 mason jar or other air tight container

What You Do:

step 1: Mix baking soda and arrowroot powders together in bowl
step 2: Add the coconut oil and essential oils and mix well
step 3: Pour your mixture into an air tight jar or container
step 4: Dip out a pea sized amount of deodorant onto your finger and apply under your arms well to keep you covered all day.

Note:

This DIY deodorant will change consistency depending on the temperature  of the room that it is stored in.  Always store in a cool dry place.  It will become hard if the temperature is cold and liquify if it’s too hot.  If its more on the solid side because of the cold, place it near your shower or on a heat vent.  Although rubbing gently between your fingers will work too.
